Getting your home office ready for a move

Posted on

Packing your home office correctly for a move is key to getting everything unpacked and working again as quickly as possible. Although there may be a lot to organise and pack, singling out the most important items can help you get working even before you're finished unpacking.

Files and documents

Your home office probably contains business records, tax documents and other files. While these records are important, you're not likely to need them immediately, so they can be a lower priority when unpacking. Store books and files in cardboard moving boxes. Be careful to leave some empty space and avoid overloading the boxes; paper is heavy, and overloaded boxes can split or be unsafe to carry. Your removals firm may be able to provide you with the boxes and other packing supplies you'll need. If you're going to need particular documents as soon as you arrive, pack them in a separate box and label it clearly.

Office furniture

Talk to your furniture removals firm about preparing your office furniture for the move. You may want to take furniture apart by removing shelves from bookcases and unscrewing legs from tables or desks. If that's the case, make sure you store any small parts such as fasteners or shelf brackets in clearly labelled plastic bags or boxes. You'll want to reassemble your high-priority furniture quickly, so put aside all the tools you'll need to do so together with any small parts. Pack them in a bag that you'll carry with you so that you know where they are on moving day. Alternatively, if your furniture removals firm will be taking care of the job, let them know which items need to be unpacked first.

Computer, printers and other electronics

Computers and other devices are vital to the modern office, and being unable to get back to work because of a missing device or cable can be very frustrating. Before packing up your office, take the opportunity to label each lead or cable. Pieces of coloured tape work well for this purpose, allowing you to quickly identify which cables go with which devices. Pack these together in a clearly labelled box so that you have everything you need to set up your workspace in one place.

Once you're at your new destination, you should be able to assemble everything you need from a small number of packing boxes. Once you've got the core of your home office unpacked, you'll be able to deal with any pressing work while completing the unpacking process at your leisure.
