What Packaging Supplies Do You Need When Moving?

Posted on

When you are packing for a move, the first thing you need to do is pick a pen and paper and go room by room indicating all the items you have and how you need to pack them. Don't leave out anything because this is how you figure out the number of packaging supplies you require.

Some items go inside boxes, others go in resealable ziplock bags (kitchen and bathroom items) and the rest can be transported as they are (for example, beds, sofas and other furniture). If you are transporting items as they are without placing them in boxes, inspect the moving truck for sharp edges or protrusions that can damage them. Also, ensure that the moving company's loading and offloading employees handle your items with care.

Boxes

Most items can fit in boxes; all you need to do is figure out the sizes of the boxes. Get strong boxes because you don't want them coming apart, especially from below. You might also need cutting tools like knives or scissors, straps and tape. Use straps or tape to ensure the boxes remain secure.

Most of the appliances in your house came inside boxes. It is important not to throw these away. Use them to package the appliances.

Don't forget to label your boxes; you might require labelling material if you don't have any in your home. You want to make work easier when you get to your destination. The moving company's loading and offloading employees will also have an easy time knowing which room to place each box.

Bubble Wrap Bags, Void Fills or Old Newspaper

You might have some fragile goods that you want to protect during your move. Use bubble wrap bags, void fills or old newspapers to fill out any spaces left in the box that would make your items move around. Start with the bottom of the box, then place your items one by one as you place bubble wrap bags, void fills or old newspapers. What you are trying to achieve is that if the box was shaken or dropped by mistake, your items would not get destroyed.

Plastic Resealable Ziplock Bags

Of course, you have some wet items, especially those in the bathroom or kitchen, which can even include food. Before placing these items in a box, put them inside sealable plastic containers or bags to avoid destroying the boxes. Sometimes you might need box liners as an extra precaution (in case one of the plastic containers or bag seals was to open or become loose.
