What Should You Use to Wrap Your Glassware Before Storing it?

Posted on

If you're putting your possessions in self storage for a while, then you need to make sure that everything fragile is well-padded and protected during its travels to and from the unit and during its stay.

If you have a lot of glassware or fragile items, then these need extra care. This is especially important if you collect sets of glasses, vintage glass or ornaments. Before you pack these items up, you should wrap them to protect them. What should you use to do this?

Newspaper Leaves an Imprint

People often like to use newspaper as a packing material. If you have a pile of newspapers at home, then this is a no-cost packing option. Like any other soft paper, newspaper will pad your glassware and keep it safe.

However, newspaper can leave its mark, especially if you'll be storing your glasses for a long time. The newsprint may transfer on to your glasses. This may not do any harm, but you'll have a big cleaning job when you finally take your glassware out of storage.

Bubble Wrap Has its Downsides

If your glassware is precious to you or valuable, then you want maximum protection. The padded structure of bubble wrap may seem like the best option.

However, you do need to use bubble wrap carefully. If you'll store your glassware for a long time, then the wrap itself may leave unsightly marks on parts of the glass.

This may not bother you much if you're using bubble wrap on regular glasses. However, if you have some vintage or highly decorated antique pieces, then the bubble wrap may damage their designs. You can still use bubble wrap, but it may be worth wrapping these kinds of items in a plain tissue paper first.

Packing Paper Does the Job

Like newspaper and bubble wrap, specialist packing paper will protect your glassware. If you wrap each piece in a sheet of this paper, you'll add adequate padding.

Packing paper has a big advantage. It won't transfer anything on to your glassware, and it won't damage decorated or fragile pieces. So this is an option worth considering if your glassware collection is important to you.

As well as making sure that each piece of your collection is padded up, it's also a good idea to pack them in specialist glass boxes. These boxes have slotted compartments in them so you can use one slot for each piece of glass. This adds extra protection to the moving and storage mix.

If you're short on packaging supplies or are finding it hard to get glass boxes, talk to the self storage site you've booked space in. Most storage companies sell a full range of packing supplies to their customers.
