Will Stuffed Toys be Okay in a Storage Unit?

Posted on

Did you know that Australia spends more money on toys than any other country in the world? Only the UK and USA come close in terms of money spent on toys. However, toys can end up taking up a lot of room over the years. That's why it is a good idea to put your children's stuffed toys into storage if they have moved on to other toys.

You can then save money by giving those stuffed toys to future generations of your family. Not only that, but your children will have more space to play in. Stuffed toys do need to be stored carefully, however.

If you are considering storing stuffed toys in a storage unit, the following tips will help you store them safely and securely.

Unstuff and Clean Stuffed Toys

When storing stuffed toys, you need to ensure that they are completely clean beforehand. The longer a stain remains, the harder it is to remove it. In fact, stains interact with fibres over time, eventually becoming permanent. Clean your stuffed toys thoroughly before placing them in storage.

Space could become an issue if many of your stuffed toys are large. To save space, remove the stuffing from stuffed toys before you store them. Doing this will benefit you in other ways too.

Avoid Vacuum-Sealed Bags

Unless you are planning to store your stuffed toys for a short period of time, don't use vacuum-sealed bags. Despite their advantages, such as space conservation, vacuum bags can damage your stuffed toys in the long term. Because there is no air in a vacuum bag, any material kept within it will lose its original shape if stored long-term. This is due to compression.

Because vacuum bags compress whatever is inside them, a stuffed toy that went into storage soft and fluffy could come out looking flat and misshapen. It could then take months to revert to its former shape—or it may remain that way forever.

Use Weatherproof Plastic Containers

Perhaps one of the best ways to store stuffed toys is to keep them inside weatherproof, airtight plastic containers. This will protect them against harsh weather conditions, such as humidity and freezing cold. If your plastic containers are airtight, you also won't have to worry about mould or mildew, both of which can ruin stuffed toys.

Lastly, remember to check on your stuffed toys once in a while. That way you can ensure they are stored out of the light and safe from any weather mishaps that may have occurred.
